The idea of memes has been generated long before internet was in use. We can assume that the origin of meme dates back to the 70s. ‘The Selfish Genre’ was a book published by world famous biologist Richard Dawkins. In that book, the author mentioned the word ‘mimeme’ which was originated from the Greek word ‘mimema’ and the shortened version is ‘meme’ which means ‘something imitated’. Tom Cruise Kills Oprah: The well known interview of Tom Cruise taken by Oprah in 2005 has been modified as a parody video in the year 2006. The parody was also featured in the Family Guy, Sesame Street and the Scary Movie 4. The ‘jump on the couch’ now signifies the public video that means ‘going off the deep end’.

Charlie Bit Me: With 450 million viewers in YouTube, this video went viral on the web in the year 2007.It was recognized as the 6th most watched video of all time. The video featured two British brothers, who are now established in their own lives. One of them, named Gerber have used the video for the advertisement of his baby food products.

Aussie Party: In the mid-January of 2008, MSN Australia posted a video in the well known video sharing sites like Break and Fark. The kid from the video became so famous that he was interviewed by Opie and Anthony within a few days and a t-shirt from the Busted Tees were released in the honor of this particular meme.

Crasher Squirrel: In the year 2009, the photo bomb of the squirrel, which looks same as Gopher from Caddyshack was posted in the National Geographic channel for initiating a contest. Many famous pictures have been modified with Photoshop with this spoiler squirrel. For example, the squirrel was inserted in the front of the picture when Neil Armstrong landed first on moon.

Bad Romance: Originated from the Lady Gaga video ‘Bad Romance’ the meme became popular in 2009.The original video is the fourth most watched video presently. The meme attracted 15 million viewers with captions ‘Rad Bromance’, ‘Badder Romance’ and ‘Bad Bromance’.

Haters Gonna Hate: This particular meme engrossed millions of viewers when it was first published in Tumblr and Reddit in the year 2009. It was a real slap to all the haters who really hates every opinion of the others and prioritizes their own opinions all the time!
